In this video Head & Neck Cancer survivor, Julie McCrossin AM discusses the keys characteristics of successful partnerships between doctors and patients to improve health care. Julie illustrates her talk with two examples where she has partnered with radiation oncologist, A/Prof Sandra Turner and medical physicist and researcher, Prof Paul Keall.
Dr Paul Keall is the Director of the ACRF Image X Institute. He a Professor in the Sydney Medical School at the University of Sydney and an NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow. He graduated with his B.Sc. from the University of Waikato, and an M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the University of Adelaide. His career has taken him to positions at Queensland University of Technology, Liverpool Cancer Therapy Centre, and Virginia Commonwealth University. Prior to his current role, he was the Director of the Radiation Physics Division at Stanford University. At the University of Sydney Pau and his team of 20+ scientists have the mission to create, share and apply novel cancer imaging and targeted radiotherapy methods that improve human health. His team have achieved significant bench-to-bedside clinical translational milestones in 4D imaging, real-time tumour position localisation, real-time adaptive radiotherapy, CT ventilation imaging and audiovisual biofeedback. Additional programs include the research and development of the Australian MRI-Linear accelerator, and the Nano-X cancer radiotherapy system.
A/Prof Sandra Turner is a radiation oncologist, advocate and educator. She is an active member of a multidisciplinary care team and co-ordinates care for people with cancer at the Crown Princess Mary Cancer Centre at Westmead. Sandra is Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine, at Westmead Clinical School. Sandra was the founding Clinical Lead of the Targeting Cancer Campaign in the Faculty of Radiation Oncology, RANZCR (Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists) and she is currently Clinical Lead, Professional Development, Research Education Network, Western Sydney Local Health District.
Julie McCrossin gets people talking. After over 20 years as a broadcaster with ABC Radio National, ABC TV and Network Ten, she is now a freelance broadcaster, podcaster & MC. Julie has qualifications in the arts, education and law. After treatment for stage four throat cancer in 2013, Julie is an Ambassador for Head & Neck Cancer Australia, Targeting Cancer and TROG Cancer Research. Julie hosts the podcast series, The Thing About Cancer and The Thing About Advanced Cancer for Cancer Council NSW. Julie also hosts podcasts and webinars for a wide variety of health, law and social justice organisations. In 2019, Julie was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the community, particularly through LGBTIQ advocacy roles and to the broadcast media. www.juliemccrossin.com
